During the early 19th century Kentucky still practiced slavery. Many doctors used their slaves for research and practice. One main doctor, Dr. Charles Caldwell, who studied at Transylvania University, used phrenology to justify slavery. He used his slaves because they were "tamable", which made them easier to enslave and use for his own purpose. He used his slaves to study the brain and skull to figure out why African Americans had large areas of veneration and cautiousness in the brain compared to whites. Dr. Caldwell's brutal story is told in a popular movie called Django. The movie portrays him well in the sense of his mistreatment and lack of respect towards his slaves. This local example demonstrates the kind of immorality that was present in the early 19th century.
