The school teacher symbolized an important issue among doctors around the early 19th century. How the school teacher used the mistreating of Sethe to teach his students is adjacent to how Dr. Simms and Dr. Caldwell used their slaves to learn about their practices without the slaves consent to do so. Back during this time slaves were given no rights and were seen as the lowest spectrum in society. In Beloved the school teacher degraded Sethe to a lesser human being which resulted in him treating her like an animal, along with him referring to her as one with students. Because of the social standing during this time, the teacher felt the empowerment and authority to rightfully do what he wanted to do with her body. This same issue is presented with Dr. Simms and Dr. Caldwell. Many people disagree with their ways of treating slaves, however, if it wasn't for them, many of their discoveries would have been prolonged for decades. While the doctors took advantage of their means of sources during that time, they did what they thought was seen as ethically right. Now a days with more advanced technology and more ethical means of sources, doctors are now properly making medical advances in their fields without disrupting the code of ethical conduct.
